Ranunculus in your garden
Ranunculus bulbs can be planted in autumn as well as in spring. Ranunculus bulbs come in many colours including white, yellow, pink, orange, red, purple-green and mixed colours. They flower from June to August. The stems can grow up to 60 cm, making them extremely suitable in flower arrangements or bouquets. The ranunculus plant is very similar to the anemone, and they are related. Ranunculus bulbs are actually tubers and are very small and claw-shaped.
How to plant ranunculus?
Ranunculus like a sunny position. A spot with shade in the morning and sun in the afternoon is also good. But ranunculus needs the sun to bloom fully. The best time to plant ranunculus bulbs is in November-December or in spring in April/May. You plant the ranunculus bulbs just 5 cm deep. You can also gently press the ranunculus bulbs into the loose soil to about 5 cm below ground level. After planting, give the spot plenty of water so that the border is well soaked. Make sure the soil is well-drained. As with the anemones, we recommend soaking the Ranunculus bulbs in water overnight.
What to do when ranunculus has flowered?
Want to keep ranunculus for next year? Do not cut the plant after flowering but let it wilt completely. This is because the plant still absorbs sunlight and nutrition, that goes to the tuber. When the plant is completely withered, you can cut off the stem. In autumn, you can remove the bulbs from the ground and keep them cool and dry. There is no guarantee that the tubers will do it all again the following year, you can take the ranunculus plant out of the ground and throw it away when the flowers have finished flowering.
