Discover the blue lupin

Blue lupins are not something you come across every day. The botanical name is: Lupins 'Gallery Blue'. They are special summer bloomers that fall under the category of perennials. In fact, lupins come back every year and are hardy to -25 degrees.

Planting instructions for a thriving garden

To plant blue lupin, find a spot with plenty of sunlight and well-drained, sandy soil. The more sunlight, the more beautiful the flowers will be. The soil may be on the acidic side, as lupins like this. However, a different type of soil doesn't matter either, the lupin is very easy. However, heavy clay soil should be avoided, as it causes water retention, which is harmful to the plant. As the flowers are fairly heavy on the stem, we recommend not planting the lupin in a windy position.

Care for the blue lupin

To best showcase blue lupin, we have the following tips:

  1. Watering: Young plants need regular watering, especially during dry periods. Water at the roots to prevent fungal diseases. If the plant is well rooted, it may be watered slightly less.
  2. Fertilise: Avoid over-fertilising. Lupins fix nitrogen in the soil themselves, which often makes fertilisation unnecessary.
  3. Support: High-growing varieties may sometimes need support. Use support canes or plant racks to keep the long flower clusters upright.
  4. Blooming flowers: Remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms.
  5. Diseases and pests: Keep an eye on the plants for problems such as fungal diseases and pests such as aphids and slugs. If necessary, treat with appropriate biological agents.
  6. Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch to keep the roots cool and retain moisture, but leave space around the crown of the plant to prevent rotting.

By following these care tips, you will help your lupines to grow and flower healthily in the garden
