1. BULBS BRING LUCK
Did you know that nature makes you happy? Spending time in a 'green' environment naturally ensures relaxation, you leave your everyday worries behind and you are given blissful feelings from plants, flowers and trees.
Through the rustling of the trees, a tulip that blows on the wind or through the silence, you recover your senses, call it a form of yoga, bulb flowers add colour to the gray tones of winter. Think of the happy feeling that comes over you when you see the first lambs frolicking in the meadow, or the first lapwing egg is found. Enjoy those bright yellow roadsides full of daffodils shouting in unison that 'a new spring, a new sound' has arrived.
2. COZY PARENT-CHILD MOMENT
There is nothing more fun than buying bulbs with your children from September to Christmas. Let them make their own choices and then create their own plot in the garden or on the balcony. Add a shovel or bulb planter and dig in mother earth with your hands.
Let them make the craziest combinations. It stimulates their imagination, you have a cozy parent-child moment and they learn in a playful way what nature has to offer. When in January, the first snowdrops stick their heads above ground level, it’s time to celebrate. Your children will see that their work has paid off, seeing something grow always causes amazement and disbelief, as if you had a little hand in it yourself. After the snowdrops come the grape hyacinths, the daffodils, the tulips. Every week a new feast of colour, shape and scent. Isn't that what everyone wants to teach their child?
3. CHOOSE COLOR
Create your own bulb field by choosing colour. Did you know that red is the colour most people in the world find attractive? In second place yellow, hence the McDonalds logo, for example. The colour red represents energy, happiness, joy and prosperity. In China, the colour red is often used in weddings. Of all colours, yellow gives the most light, it is therefore not surprising that they are used in combination. Red has many shades, from the bright tomato red to the deep dark burgundy, red versions that we often see in tulips. The red of the luxury fashion brand Hermès, le rouge d'Hermès, which is almost orange.
4. COLOR BLOCKING, YOU CAN
One of the symbols of red is of course love, romance and passion, Valentine's Day, the colour of emoji hearts, they are all red, red, red. Just like in clothing, red also stands out in bulbs. For example, one of the fashion trends this winter is colour blocking. That means that the colours are allowed to 'clash'. Red with pink or bright pink with green and blue.
You can relax in your own bulb field, for example, combining creamy white tulips with bright orange, a real classic . Fantasy reigns supreme in fashion, extend it to your garden or balcony.
5. BULBS DO IT EVERYWHERE.
Another of the advantages of flower bulbs is that a bulb does not need much space, small action, but a big result. Remove a paving stone from your front garden, hang a planter filled with bulbs on your garden fence, or plant your entire garden full of bulbs, including those of your neighbours. Do you have your own exciting series of images all spring?
6. SUPPORT YOUR LOCALS
Bulbs are grown on about 28,000 hectares in the Netherlands. Why those brown balls do so well here is to do with our climate. Bulbs grow well when they are exposed to sea air, sand and acids. That has been the case for centuries, a kind of evolution à la Darwin. Traditionally, dune sand from the sea was used to build chic country houses. The excavated soils of the dunes on which peat had grown, turned out to be the right breeding ground for tulips, daffodils and crocuses, amongst other things.
Moreover, we in our own country are usually sufficiently cold. With a salty wind, and rain, the right humidity is supplied. Add to that the soil contains good fungi and insects and you have the perfect recipe for a rock-solid product. And, perhaps strange, but a bulb grows through cold, a downpour gives a bulb length. Fun facts don't you think? However, this weather pattern only applies to spring bloomers. Summer bloomers such as dahlias and callas do not like frost, which is why we plant them in the spring, when the winter is really over.
7. EARLY 'BIRDS'
The joy of the bulb flower starts as early as January with snowdrops, crocuses, chinodoxia, wild daffodils and anemones. They have defied the frost and are therefore here to stay, with a bit of luck they pop up every year. It is nice to walk in the woods at this time of year, snowdrops hide everywhere and add colour to trees and leaves. Plant them in your own garden, under trees and shrubs that lose their leaves during the winter. Crocuses are sun worshipers more so than snowdrops, they only want to open when the sun is shining, but then they are immediately attractive to bees. And chinodoxia is a gift from heaven. With its beautiful subtle blue flowers with a white heart, they look like a painting from the Golden Age.
8. GRANDE PARADE
The Grande Parade of flowering bulbs usually follows around April. When not only the days lengthen, but also the tulips, allium (purple ornamental onions), are eye-catching. At first there are only green stems for a long time, but then suddenly the purple flowers follow and shine for a long time. The Imperial Fritillary is another beautiful blockbuster, with its intense colours of yellow, orange and red, they shine beautifully in a large pot. The crown imperial lives up to its name as emperor amongst the bulbs.
9. BIG STEPS, HOME FAST
Bulbs are planted like this. Simply order the bulbs online and wait for the package to arrive. Loosen the soil well with a shovel and plant them at a depth of three times the height of the bulb. The same goes for the width. Sounds like rocket science, doesn't it. Just remember: Three times to the right and three times down. With the tip of the sphere facing up is the correct way, but once nestled in the earth it finds its own way upwards. It is important to plant bulbs quickly after purchase, otherwise they can quickly dry out. Bulbs are very good in pots, provided you make sure that rain and water can drain away, otherwise they will get wet feet and rot. So the pot should have a hole and whatever old shards, gravel or hydro grains are at the bottom of the pot. Multipurpose potting compost can be used.
10. NICE PRICE
In the 16th century, tulip bulbs cost as much as a canal house in Amsterdam. It was the period of the so-called tulip mania . The lively trade in exotic tulip bulbs was then booming and there was a lot of investment. The tulip even became a means of payment for a while. Nowadays you can have a box of bulbs for a small amount of money and you can even order them online. That is certainly one of the advantages of flower bulbs.
