How should you plant dahlias?

When the chance of frost has gone, it is time to plant dahlia tubers . This is in April-May. Keep an eye on the weather forecast because dahlia tubers die when it freezes. In contrast to flower bulbs, they can handle this very badly. If you have already planted them and it freezes, then cover them with leaves or moss.

What is the location of a dahlia?

Dahlias love sunlight, which gives them more beautiful colors and makes them fuller. So plant the dahlias in a bright spot. If you don't do this, the stems will become too long and they will need support. Make sure you plant them in a nutritious, well drained but not too dry soil. Dahlias do not develop in soil that is too dry, but the tubers can rot in soil that is too wet. Also make sure that you do not place the dahlias in a place that is too windy. Especially tall and large varieties can suffer from the wind and can blow over, causing the stem to break.

How deep do you plant a dahlia tuber?

You plant a dahlia with the thickened roots down in the ground. However, no matter how you put the tuber in the ground, the flower will find its way up. Make sure that the piece of old stem is just below the ground, then you will have the right depth. The new plant develops around and on this old piece of stem.

What is the best soil for dahlias?

A dahlia likes well-drained soil, and also food. A rich soil with lots of organic matter is perfect for a larger dahlia. You can create this soil yourself by mixing some compost, soil with old leaves or potting soil with the garden soil.

How to plant dahlias in pots

Smaller dahlia varieties such as mignon, gallery and topmix are best planted in pots. Do use a larger sized pot so that the dahlia can get enough nutrition from the soil but does not need to be watered every day. Of course, planting large dahlias in pots is also possible, just make sure the pot is even bigger and taller. Also place a stake near the plant so that when the flower stem becomes very tall, it does not grow crooked or fall over.

Plant the dahlia just like in the open ground with the thick root downwards. In a pot, the cut piece of stem may protrude above the ground. Do not fill the pot completely with potting soil, but leave about 5 cm of space so that the water does not go over the edge during watering.

Care after planting

After planting the dahlia tubers, it is important to take good care of your dahlias. Caring for dahlias is very easy, but you do need to take the time to do it.

Water regularly to keep the soil moist
Pinch out the top growing tip, when the plant has made 3 to 4 clumps of leaves for a fuller plant
Give a little fertilizer every month
Dead head flowers to encourage new flower growth
At the end of the season: when the frosts return, you can cut off the yellow leaves and remove the tuber from the ground

How to plant anemones?

Anemone bulbs can be planted in seed trays (for pulling), in pots or in the open ground. You can plant the bulbs in the fall or spring. If there is a chance of severe frost, it is better not to plant them until spring. For anemone bulbs it is important that you first soak the hard tubers in water overnight. The tubers are then softer and root faster. Anemones are low bloomers, making them perfect as ground cover. You will therefore also find anemones in our Bloombol mixtures. These fit perfectly into the mixtures.

Where can I plant anemones?

You plant anemones in a well drained, fertile, sandy and light soil. They do well in sheltered spots or between rocks.

How deep should you plant anemones?

You plant anemone bulbs about 7 cm deep. It is important that you do not plant them too deep, otherwise the vulnerable bulbs will not reach the surface.

How far apart should you plant anemones?

Anemone bulbs are planted with about 10 cm distance between each bulb. This way every plant can grow fully and you get a sea of anemone flowers. Are you planting the anemones between other types of bulbs? Then you can keep more distance, about 30 cm.

How do you plant anemones in pots?

Do you have a terrace? Then it is nice to plant anemones in pots. You can plant the anemones alone, but combined with other summer bulbs make a lovely display. Anemones stay low, which gives a nice effect if you plant taller tulips with them.

First, fill the pot with potshards, shells or hydro granules for good drainage. A small layer is sufficient. It is also useful to have a few small holes at the bottom of the pot so that excess water can escape. Then fill the pot with potting soil to about 10 cm below the rim. Sprinkle the bulbs in the pot and then fill the pot up to the brim with potting soil. Water and voila!

If it freezes for a long period in the winter, put the pots in a shed or wrap the pots in bubble wrap. Frost can easily penetrate deep into a pot from several sides and damage the bulb.

How to plant summer bulbs?

In 10 steps to a garden full of colour

Note! Do not plant the bulbs and tubers until the risk of frost has passed. The best time to plant is therefore from May onwards.

1. Open your package

Open your Bloombol package right after you receive it. This way, the bulbs get air and you can immediately see which varieties are included in your package.

Tip: You can soak the dahlias in a bowl of water overnight, as they are quite dried out. This will allow them to start growing immediately once they are placed in the ground.

2. Preparation

Provide a shovel, gloves and a watering can or garden hose.

3. Mix the bulbs

Remove the bags from the box and make a collection of the smaller bulbs. Keep the larger bulbs such as dahlias aside for a while. Mix the smaller bulbs together in the box.

4. Find a nice spot

You can plant the bulbs almost anywhere in the garden, in the lawn, in the soil, among other plants or in a pot on the patio. Just make sure you have a sunny position, as summer flower bulbs need warmth and light. Note! Dahlias do not like wet feet. If the soil is too wet, they will not survive. So pay attention when you are on clay-like soil, for example. If the soil is itself very wet, you can mix fine sand, shells or gravel through it.

5. Prepare the place

Remove branches, old leaves or weeds and make room for bulbs. Provide a nice piece of ground to dig a hole. If you are planting in pots, then clean these removing coarse dirt too.

6. Planting the bulbs

Now it is time to plant the bulbs. Dig a hole in the desired patch of soil. How deep should the hole be? For summer bulbs we stick to about 2x the bulb size (about 10 cm), except for dahlias, which you plant against the soil surface. Pay attention to the planting instructions on the bulb packaging. Also make sure there is enough space between the bulbs and tubers. For dahlia bulbs, keep a planting distance of 40-50 cm between each bulb.

7. Spreading and distribution

Divide the larger bulbs and tubers first. The larger the bulb, the greater the distance between them. You can find the correct spacing on the packaging. Make sure the larger bulbs lie with the tip up and the beard down. For dahlias, the stem should be up.

Now that you've divided up the big bulbs, it's time for the small ones. Take the Flower Bulb Box that holds the mixed-up bulbs. Sprinkle these in the hole and distribute the bulbs well.

8. Cover with soil and water.

Toss the excavated soil back into place. Also pour some water over it with the watering can or garden hose so that the soil is well moistened.

9. Plants in a pot

Step 1: Put a layer of hydro pellets in the pot.
Step 2: Pour potting soil into the pot. Fill the pot to about 10 cm below the rim.
Step 3: Divide the bulbs over the pot.
Step 4: Cover the pot with more potting soil. Step 5: Spray the pot with warm water so that the soil is moist.

10. Spray some water and then be patient

As of now, you have to be patient. In summer, the first green dots will rise above the ground and the first flowers will appear. It is very important to keep the soil well moist, especially in the first few months. However, make sure the soil does not stay constantly wet.
