Anemones
Characteristics of anemones
Anemones are fine bulbous flowers of which some species naturalize. They belong to the ranunculus family. There are spring and autumn anemones. They grow to a height of between 50 and 150 cm, with spring anemones remaining lower and autumn anemones often exceeding 1 metre. Plant anemones in the autumn and in the spring. It is one of the few flower bulbs that can be planted in both periods. They bloom in both spring and summer. They come in the colours red, pink, blue, purple and white and grow up to 30 cm high. There are single and double flowered anemones. Anemone bulbs look like small, hard, dark-colored tubers.
Where do anemones come from
Anemones are native to southern Europe and Asia. In the Netherlands, the anemone has only been known for 400 years after its introduction by Carolus Clusius. Decades later, anemones were widely cultivated in Europe. Especially in France, nurseries were full of them.
There are different colors of anemones, they all have a different origin. It is also believed that the type of soil determines the color. The red anemone is most common in Morocco, the purple in Israel and the white in another place in Israel. In the Netherlands, the eastern anemone, blue anemone, wood anemone and yellow anemone occur in the wild in various places.
The anemone coronaria that you can also order occurs naturally in the Mediterranean, including France, mountains in Italy, Spain and the Balkans, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Israel, Syria and Lebanon.
What types of anemones are there?
There are about 120 species of anemones. Most flower in spring and summer, but the perennial Japanese anemone blooms in the autumn.
In early spring, in forest areas with rich soil, you can find the eastern, blue and the wood anemone. The wood anemone is white with a yellow heart and often grows on bank sides. The yellow anemone (Anemone ranunculoides) is rarer but can also be found in forest areas. At Bloombol we also have anemones in our range: the Anemone coranaria. This anemone resembles a poppy and grows on stiff stems in the colours white, pink, violet-blue and red. They are hardy to -10 degrees.
