How should I care for planted hyacinth bulbs before they bloom?

Unlike tulip bulbs, it is better to water hyacinth bulbs as little as possible. The bulb can rot from a too wet location. Just make sure they don't dry out. The advice is therefore not to give the hyacinths extra water in the winter and to ensure that the piece of soil in which they are planted is not too wet. When spring comes, you can water the location during dry periods to prevent it from drying out. However, watering every day is not necessary. In terms of fertilization, hyacinths do not need much. You can fertilize them occasionally during and after the flowering period until the green leaves have died. If you do this correctly, you will enjoy your hyacinths for several years. However, the density of the number of flowers on the hyacinth decreases over the years.

Is a hyacinth an annual or does it bloom every year?

As you have read above, hyacinths often come back every year. However, with a smaller flower and less flowering density. This density can easily be reduced by 50% in the second year. That is why we recommend treating hyacinths as annuals and planting new bulbs every year.

My hyacinths have finished blooming, now what?

When the hyacinths have finished blooming, it is best to cut off the stem with the withered flowers. Leave the foliage (green leaves) alone. You can only remove this after everything has withered naturally. The leaves continue to collect sunlight and therefore absorb nutrition. This nutrition does not go to the faded flower, but directly to the bulb. This allows the hyacinth bulb to develop to bloom again the following year.

Please note that there is no guarantee that hyacinths will bloom for a second time just like the first year. The hyacinth bulb needs certain temperatures to develop itself for re-flowering. Remove the stem with faded flowers;
Leave the leaves and stems until they are completely dead (withered). Have they withered? Then you can remove everything and take the bulbs out of the ground (often possible in June);
Dry the bulbs. You can do this by, for example, placing them in the sun;
Store the bulbs somewhere in a shed or garage. You can possibly store the bulbs in a cardboard box or mesh container.
You can plant these bulbs in the open ground from September to December. They now receive the natural cold temperature treatment they need to shine again in the spring.

Can hyacinths freeze in winter?

The bulbs of hyacinths can freeze if you plant them during a period of frost or snow. The bulb can freeze when the frost penetrates the soil into the bulb. To prevent this, you can put a pile of old leaves or straw on the planting site. Also keep a close eye on the weather forecast. When the hyacinths have made roots, they seem to be less sensitive to cold. The best period for planting hyacinths is therefore September and October.

If it freezes for a longer period in the winter, put the pots in a shed or wrap the pots in bubble wrap. Frost can easily penetrate deep into a pot from several sides and damage the bulb.

What should I do with the planted tulip bulbs before they bloom?

It is important to water the bed where the tulip bulbs are planted well. During autumn it often rains, additional watering is not necessary. If we have a dry autumn, don't forget your flower bulbs and water them once or twice a week. Also later in March, from the moment you see the first green shoots coming up, it is important to water regularly in dry weather. Then sprinkle a little fertilizer.

My tulip bulbs have finished blooming, now what?

Tulip bulbs should be treated as annuals. You can't just leave them where they come back (bigger) every year. When the flowers have finished blooming, it is important that you remove the faded flower from the stem. We call this 'headings'. As a result, all nutrition goes to the bulb, which is important if you want the bulb to bloom again next year. Leave the stems and leaves for a while. You only remove these when they have died completely and you can actually remove the brown withered remains from the ground without much effort.
Now you can do several things. Remove the bulbs and buy new ones next year, leave the bulbs in the ground or remove the bulbs from the ground and plant them again next year.

If you leave the bulbs in the ground after you have cut them, you have a chance that they will bloom again the following year. The soil the bulb is in is actually just a little too cold. As a result, the bulb does not receive the correct temperature treatment and the flowers often become smaller and thinner. There is also a chance that only leaves will appear or nothing will come up. In general, the flowers get smaller every year when you leave your tulips in the ground. Botanical tulips are an exception, they naturalize and come back every year. It is also often said of the Darwin tulips that they can come back every year. However, we do not recommend leaving the bulbs in the ground. When you leave tulips in the ground, there is a chance that fungi and diseases will develop.

Don't want to take care of the bulbs to reuse next year because you still want new varieties and colours? Then you can remove the bulbs, stem and all, from the ground immediately after flowering. You can now use the piece of land again for nice bedding plants.

Now put the peeled tulip bulbs in an airy bag and hang it somewhere in a shed or garage. In about 20 degrees celcius. You can also use old pantyhose for this if you don't have a bag. The bags are hung so that they are kept airy and no mice can reach them. Now the bulbs hang, in an airy, dry place at room temperature, the formula for re-flowering your tulip bulbs.
From September to December you can plant these bulbs in the ground again. They now receive the natural cold temperature treatment they need to shine again in the spring.

What to do if the tulip bulbs have just been planted?
Tulip bulbs love water. Provide sufficient water to the tulip bulbs during dry weather in autumn and in spring when the first green shoots appear.

Can I cut the stem when the tulip has finished flowering?
No, you only cut off the faded flower. You leave the stem and the leaf in place. You can remove them in June/July when the leaves and stem are completely withered. The bulb is still in the ground.

Do I have to remove the tulip bulbs from the ground after flowering?
If you want the same bulb to bloom again next year, you must remove the tulip bulbs from the ground. You do not do this immediately after the flower has finished flowering. The second year there will be no or hardly a flower to be seen. The tulip bulb can also release certain acids, which are not good for a healthy soil life.

Hoe moet je hyacinten verzorgen? Hyacinten bloeien van januari tot en met mei. Je hebt vroegbloeiende hyacinten maar ook laatbloeiende. Hoe hou je ze het mooist? Lees dit artikel over alles wat je moet weten voor als je hyacintenbollen gaat planten.

Hoe moet ik geplante hyacintenbollen verzorgen voordat ze gaan bloeien?

In tegenstelling tot tulpenbollen is het beter om hyacinten bollen zo min mogelijk water te geven. Van een te natte standplaats kan de bol rotten. Zorg er wel voor dat ze niet uitdrogen. Het advies is daarom om de hyacinten in de winter geen extra water te geven én erop te letten dat het stuk grond waar ze in geplant zijn niet te nat is. Wanneer het lente wordt kun je in droge periodes de standplaats bewateren om uitdroging te voorkomen. Echter iedere dag water geven is absoluut niet nodig. Qua bemesting hebben hyacinten niet veel nodig. Je kunt ze tijdens en na de bloeiperiode af en toe bemesten tot de groene bladeren afgestorven zijn. Doe je dit goed dan zal je meerdere jaren genieten van jouw hyacinten. Wél wordt de dichtheid van het aantal bloemen op de hyacint met de jaren kleiner.

Is een hyacint eenjarig of bloeit hij ieder jaar weer?

Zoals je hierboven hebt gelezen komen hyacinten vaak ieder jaar weer terug. Echter wel met een kleinere bloem en minder bloeidichtheid. Deze dichtheid kan het tweede jaar zomaar met 50% zijn verminderd. Daarom adviseren wij om de hyacinten als eenjarig te zien en ieder jaar nieuwe bollen te planten.

Mijn hyacinten zijn uitgebloeid, wat nu?

Als de hyacinten zijn uitgebloeid kun je het beste de steel met de verdorde bloemen afsnijden. Het loof (groene bladeren) laat je zitten. Deze kan je pas verwijderen nadat alles op natuurlijke wijze verdord is. De bladeren blijven namelijk zonlicht verzamelen en daardoor voeding opnemen. Deze voeding gaat nu niet naar de uitgebloeide bloem maar direct naar de bol. Hierdoor ontwikkelt de hyacintenbol zich om het volgende jaar weer te bloeien.

Wil je de hyacinten volgend jaar weer in volle glorie laten bloeien? Volg dan het onderstaande stappenplan. Let er wel op dat er geen garantie is dat de hyacinten bollen voor een tweede keer bloeien net zoals het eerste jaar. De hyacintenbol heeft bepaalde temperaturen nodig om zichzelf te ontwikkelen voor herbloei. Deze temperaturen komen in Nederland van nature niet voor, maar we kunnen de ideale omstandigheden wel proberen na te bootsen.

Verwijder de steel met uitgebloeide bloemen;
Laat de bladeren en stelen zitten tot ze volledig afgestorven (verdord) zijn. Zijn ze verdord? Dan kan je alles verwijderen en de bollen uit de grond halen (vaak in juni mogelijk);
Droog de bollen. Dit kan je doen door ze bijvoorbeeld in de zon te leggen;
Bewaar de bollen ergens in een schuurtje of garage op. Eventueel kan je de bollen in een kartonnen doos of gaasbak bewaren.
Van september tot en met december kan je deze bollen weer in de volle grond planten. Zij krijgen nu de natuurlijke koude temperatuurbehandeling die ze nodig hebben om in het voorjaar weer te stralen.

Kunnen hyacinten in de winter bevriezen?

De bollen van hyacinten kunnen bevriezen wanneer je ze plant in een periode dat het vriest of sneeuwt. De bol kan bevriezen wanneer de vrieskou door de grond, in de bol trekt. Om dit te voorkomen kan je een hoopje oude bladeren of stro op de plantplaats leggen. Houd ook het weerbericht goed in de gaten. Wanneer de hyacinten wortels hebben gemaakt lijken ze minder gevoelig te zijn voor kou. De beste periode voor hyacinten planten is daarom in september en oktober.

Als het in de winter voor een langere periode gaat vriezen, zet de potten dan even in een schuurtje of wikkel de potten in noppenfolie. Vorst kan namelijk eenvoudig diep en vanuit meerdere kanten in een pot doordringen en de bol beschadigen.

Hoeveel water hebben geplante hyacinten nodig?

Hoe alliums verzorgen?

Wanneer de allium bollen geplant zijn is het enkele maanden wachten totdat de eerste stelen en bladeren te zien zijn. Hoe kun je alliums het beste verzorgen?

Bemesten alliums

Strooi wat mest om de opkomende planten heen en meng het goed door de grond. Geef slechts een handje mest per border. Bij te veel mest ontwikkelen de bloemen zich niet. In de zomer zijn de meeste alliums uitgebloeid.

Wat moet ik doen met de uitgebloeide alliums?

Verwijder de bladeren en stelen pas als deze volledig bruin geworden zijn. De plant haalt namelijk nieuwe energie uit het blad om zich te ontwikkelen voor het volgende bloei jaar. Haal wel de uitgebloeide bloemen eraf. Verder hoef je de bollen niet uit de grond te halen, want allium bollen zijn winterhard.

Wat moet ik doen met de allium bollen in de winter?

Als je de allium bollen in de volle grond hebt geplant hoef je niets te doen. Echter een hoopje oude bladeren over het geplante oppervlakte strooien kan geen kwaad. Heb je de bollen in een pot geplant? Dan raden wij je aan om deze in de winter af te dekken met oude bladeren of stro en de zijkant van de pot met bubbelplastic of zeil.
