Crocosmia bulbs
The crocosmia, also known as montbretia, is a sunny flower that blooms in summer. The crocosmia is a summer bloomer that fits in any border. Especially in wild or pick-your-own borders, the plant does very well. Another good thing is that the bulb is hardy. So, there is no need to remove the bulb after planting. Crocosmia is not a bulb but a tuberous plant.
Colour and appearance
The Crocosmia Lucifer is red with orange hues. There are yellow accents in the 'cockscomb'. The ovules of the spent flower are initially green and resemble berries. The cut flowers will keep for a maximum of 10 days, but the best branches will keep for months.
Crocosmia plants
Crocosmia bulbs should be planted in April in a sunny spot. The soil may be a little drier, as it is a true prairie plant. During planting, enrich the soil with some extra compost.
You plant the crocosmia bulbs at a depth of about 10 cm in well-drained soil. Keep about 10 cm distance between each bulb. In principle, the crocosmia is hardy when planted in dry soil. If you do plant the bulbs in a spot that is a bit more humid, it is better to lift them in winter.
Care crocosmia
The crocosmia needs little care during the flowering period. After the flowering period, you will see that the leaves discolour and the flowers shrivel. You can cut off these spent flowers in early October. Make sure you leave the leaves in place. This way, the old leaves protect the crown of the plant during the winter. When winter is over, you can cut off the brown foliage completely and the new plant will show itself again in summer.
What to do in case of frost?
Most species of crocosmia are hardy. Nevertheless, it is recommended to cover the plant with a good layer of leaves or straw in moderate to severe frost. In pots, however, the bulbs are more sensitive to frost. It is therefore best to put the pots in a cool but frost-free place in winter and plant the crocosmia in soil that is not too moist.
