The canna, is tropical appearance
It is a tall plant with sword-shaped leaves that grow upwards. Flower stalks grow from the leaves, producing beautiful flowers of all kinds of colours in summer. The plant grows about 60-150 cm tall. Cannas are basically not hardy, but with mild winters and a drier location there is a chance they will survive. But like dahlias, we recommend taking the tubers out of the ground before winter.
Canna 'City of Portland'
Canna City of Portland has a beautiful coral-pink colour. The core of the flowers have yellow and dark pink accents. This canna grows about 120 cm tall. Each stem will have several flower buds. Note that it can take several years for the Canna plant to reach maturity. If you fertilise well during the season, the Canna will produce flowers as early as the first year.
Planting Canna bulbs
You can propagate cannas from March onwards in a heated greenhouse or from May (when the risk of frost has gone) in open ground. It is best if you plant several cannas in groups. Find a sunny spot and plant the canna bulbs here about 5 cm deep. Plant the bulbs about 30 cm apart.
Taking care of cannas
Cannas need a lot of sun, water and nutrition. A combination of these three ensures that the canna develops beautiful flowers. Do you see dead flowers? Then cut them off at the bottom of the stem, cut the stem just above the ground. As a result, new stems will develop, and the plant will flower longer! A canna is very suitable for picking gardens!
Cannas in winter
Cannas are basically not hardy but can certainly survive a mild winter. Plant your cannas in dry soil and cover the spot with plenty of leaves in winter. You can also choose to take the rhizomes out of the ground before winter and store them. With dahlias, this is also recommended.
